The Cake Store

The first day of spring sees me in my favourite cafe (in Nowra) “The Cake Store” (in Kinghorne Street).

There is an alchemy in the way sugar, butter, flour, fruit and chocolate scents the air. Add to the mix great coffee and service, and you know why I’m happy to be here.

This small store will seat 26 comfortably (plus a few extras) and it is almost always full. The floors are old polished concrete and the patina of age adds to the character, particularly when coupled with the display case constucted of recycled timber and glass.

Modern white and timber tables are accompanied by mismatched timber chairs. You feel comfortable, its like sitting in your Nanna’s kitchen white eating her homebaking.

If you like food colouring and mock cream - go elsewhere. There is something wholesome about the food here. They use the best ingredients and the customer always comes first.

Food allergies are catered for, with a number of gluten free options. The staff are more than happy to point you in the right direction.

The Cake Store ticks all the boxes for me and I hope you get to experience their food and service first hand.

Life, the Universe, and a ‘Cup of Joe’

There are probably alot of other things out there that matter more than a good cup of coffee. World peace, freedom from hunger, clean water……the list is endless.

So where am I going with my blog?

As a 40 something mother with a 20 something daughter that I raised primarily on my own (with the love and support of my family and friends). I have had a measure of life experience and now feel the urge to put some of what I have learned in writing.

If you have raised children on your own, often without the financial support of your ex, you know what it is like. The last person on the list is always you.

Early on I realised that the one thing I could afford each week was a decent cup of coffee.

To spend that precious few dollars on something not worth drinking, was a big disappointment.

If you don’t drink coffee tea can be just as good especially leaf tea in your own little pot.

I found I needed that 20 to 30 minutes to myself just to re-group and savour something just for me.

So that is what you will find here, great cafes and anything someone has worked hard to produce. That was the other thing I learned to appreciate: handmade, homemade and homegrown. Add to these the recycled and revived (furniture etc…) and we will all be on the same page.

Will try to blog regularly, painting at present and keyboards and paint don’t mix.

Kez.

Life is too short to drink bad coffee…
